A new type of invisibility cloak could take the heat off hot devices. A theoretical cloak that can shield a protected area from intense temperatures is described online March 26 in Optics Express.

?You can just dress your satellite in a thermal cloak,? says study author Sebastien Guenneau, of the French National Center for Scientific Research and the University of Aix-Marseille. A heat cloak just 1 or 2 centimeters thick might potentially protect a satellite from overheating as it re-entered the atmosphere, he says.

Until now, most invisibility cloaks have been made from metamaterials that guide light waves around a certain region of space, obscuring anything that lies within from sight. Similar cloaks have been designed to distort the trajectory of sound waves.

In the new study, similar ideas were applied to bend heat as it disperses in space. In a two-dimensional cloak, most of the heat could be manipulated to move around a cloaked region 300 micrometers across, or the size of a typical amoeba.

Though heat isn?t completely blocked, but only slowed, from dissipating into the cloaked area, Guenneau says there are potential applications for preventing materials from heating up too fast.

As computers are made on smaller scales, it?s harder to incorporate fans or heat sinks to deal with heat, says Nicholas Fang, a professor in mechanical engineering at MIT. This paper ?opens up new opportunities to dissipate the heat laterally, uniformly through all directions,? he says.

Guenneau?s team also describes another theoretical tool that uses metamaterials to direct heat within a specific region, which could be useful in building better solar panels.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 20, 2012) ? While scientists believe conditions suitable for life might exist on the so-called "super-Earth" in the Gliese 581 system, it's unlikely to be transferred to other planets within that solar system.

"One of the big scientific questions is how did life get started and how did it spread through the universe," said Jay Melosh, distinguished professor of earth and atmospheric sciences. "That question used to be limited to just the Earth, but we now know in our solar system there is a lot of exchange that takes place, and it's quite possible life started on Mars and came to Earth. There's also been a great deal of discussion about the possible spread of life in the universe from star to star."

Moon rocks and Mars meteorites have been found on Earth, which led Melosh to previously suggest living microbes could be exchanged among planets in a similar manner.

A Purdue research team has found that, in contrast to our own solar system, the exchange of living microbes between "super-Earth" and planets in that solar system is not likely to occur.

Laci Brock, a student studying interdisciplinary physics and planetary science, and Melosh will present those findings?March 20 at the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.

Brock examined the Gliese 581 planetary system because Planet d, known as super-Earth, falls in a "habitable zone" where liquid water could possibly exist.

"Laci has found the somewhat surprising result that it is very difficult for materials to spread throughout that system in the same way it could take place in our solar system," Melosh said.

All four planets found in Gliese 581 are within close proximity to their central star, which results in large orbital velocities, Brock said. However, the initial velocity of material leaving Planet d is not enough to allow exchanges among planets.

"Planet d would have a very small chance of transferring material to the other planets in the Gliese system and, thus, is far more isolated, biologically, than the inner planets of our own solar system," Brock said. "It really shows us how unique our solar system is."

Melosh said a more extended solar system would be needed for exchange of materials among planets.

"None of the solar systems that have been found so far would have opportunities for exchange of life among the different planets like what our own solar system offers," he said.

The Opik-Arnold method was used to simulate 10,000 particles being ejected from Planet e and super-Earth. The velocity ranges of the particles were scaled from each of the planet's orbital velocities, which is very high by solar system standards due to the close proximity to their central star.

"Ejections from Planet d have a low probability of impact on any other planet than itself, and most ejected particles would enter an initial hyperbolic orbit and be ejected from the planetary system," Brock said.

Several members of Purdue's planetary sciences department are attending the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, presenting research on possible biologic contamination of Mars' moon Phobos by microbes from the surface of Mars; the formation of jets on comets; and gravity anomalies around large lunar craters.

"Purdue has quite a showing of different people at this conference to showcase their work," Melosh said.

A furious John calls him back to witness the rest of the killing and Jamie, eventually overcome by prolonged torture, strangles the person himself so that you can spare him anymore agony. But that struggle between brutal violence plus a deeper psychological breakdown associated with both John and Jamie can be reflected in Kurzels way of the film itself.

?Snowtown? could certainly be called brave, but its also extremely uneven. The first half on the film, in which Jamie will be slowly groomed and introduced into Johns world is usually easily the best perhaps the film. Shot in hand-held style inside the ugly, earthy browns of an Australian lower class town, watching John setting the particular bait and Jamie taking it can be intensely compelling and unsettling all while doing so. So when the film shifts in to the graphic depictions of the killings ? the initial of which, partially described above, caused a massive influx of walkouts ? really feel superfluous, indulgent and unnecessary. As a character, John is already daunting, more so because the depths of his depravity are left largely to the imagination. However, when we see John from the act, the mystery of how far his moral code features fallen is disappointingly clarified.

Women's Issues Regarding Mental Health

The lives of most people involve some joy and some pain. The latter has a tendency to affect mental health. Some tragedies including domestic violence, assault, or loss of a loved one can cause this pain. Fortunately, there are techniques and people to turn to in times of tragedy like this. Having someone to talk to who may change your perspective about the matter and thinking about the positive aspects can be of benefit, as well as talking over the best solutions to such problems. One factor which may also affect mental health for women is the change in physical health. The change in hormone levels due to the monthly cycle can affect mood and cause irritation and tearfulness.

In the developed world, women represent about 65 percent of patients in mental institutions. There are two common explanations of this situation. One is the social factors, women are more likely to be diagnosed to have a mental illness because of sex-role stereotyping, which presumes that women are prone to emotional stress because of social factors specific to their gender role. The other factor is that women can find themselves more anxious, depressed or fearful. Womens disadvantaged social status can sometimes generate a greater level of mental health problems.

Certain mental health disorders are more prevalent in women. Disorders includes: depression, anxiety and specific phobias, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), eating disorder, and Schizophrenia. Depression is thought to be the most common mental disorder. The number of women diagnosed to have it is roughly double that of men. It may not seem obvious to others if someone is experiencing it, but the illness is upsetting and unbearable. Feeling anxious about aspects in life may not be considered as a problem for most people. Just like depression, the number of women who are affected by PTSD is twice as much as men. Women account for at least 65 percent of binge-eating disorder cases. Some women do eat too much to cope with depression. Schizophrenia is an illness that can cause a person to have difficulty in deciding what is real and what is not.

Some research studies in issues related to women?s mental health include: the differences in brain development that provide insights into the treatment and prevention of depression; mood and memory processes in women that may make it harder for them to quit smoking; effects of estrogen on memory, behavior, cognition, and emotion, and particularly how estrogen seems to increase rates of PTSD and depression; genetics specific to women that may contribute to alcoholism. It is important that women recognize the need to have good mental health. No one is exempt in feeling anxious and worried from time to time. But it is easy to notice when a woman is experiencing so, because she may display a negative disposition that may influence her ability to function normally. We all know that most mental health disorders do not have an exact cause. It may result from a combination of life events, genes, brain chemicals, and hormones.

It is not our fault if we experiencing such issues. We should not keep ourselves from it because it will not help us if we do not face it, and often this can lead to the worst outcome. It is better if you reach out to others for help like a psychologist, psychiatrist or even your family. Always keep in mind that mental illness should not be taken lightly, thus, it should be treated immediately. If treatment is successful, you can enjoy your life again.
