2 face indecency charges after nude McDonald's run

(AP) ? Two people who pulled up at a McDonald's drive-thru in western Illinois completely naked face public indecency charges.

Police in Galesburg say a 19-year-old El Paso man and a 21-year-old Galesburg woman have been released from Knox County Jail after being ordered to appear in court to face the charges.

WGIL Radio reports that the duo was still in the McDonald's parking lot when officers arrived just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. Police say the man was crouched over in the driver's seat trying to pull on a pair of pants while his passenger was covering up in a blanket.

WGIL reports that the pair told officers the late night fast-food run might not have been a great idea but that they both still thought it was funny.

Russell Brand Files For Divorce From Katy Perry

Couple calls it quits after a week of swirling rumors.

It appears that one of entertainment's most spirited couples -- Katy Perry and Russell Brand -- are heading for divorce. After the two were spotted separately over the holidays -- neither wearing their wedding rings -- rumors of a split reached a fever pitch Thursday.

Now TMZ is reporting that Russell Brand has filed for divorce in Los Angeles citing "irreconcilable differences."

Brand has released a statement, saying, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

The couple, who met at the 2008 VMAs and married in India in 2010, have no children.

Brand recently addressed the breakup rumors with Ellen DeGeneres. "There are always rumors, aren't there? In the end, you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," Brand joked. "I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married," he added. "I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."

Perry took to Twitter in November to brush off earlier rumblings. "First I'm pregnant & then I'm divorced. What am I 'All My Children'?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime ...," she tweeted.

As of press time, neither celebrity, both with massive followings, had addressed the court filing on Twitter.

She adds: "As my good friend said `well, at least you got married in Vegas in a pink Cadillac! Can't get more Rock n Roll than that.'"

Roman Szendrey, who maintains the site, told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday the report is accurate and was personally posted by O'Connor.

Ash leads Texas over Cal 21-10 in Holiday Bowl (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? David Ash threw for one touchdown and caught a TD pass to lead Texas to a 21-10 victory against California in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night.

The Longhorns (8-5) had five takeaways and sacked Cal's Zach Maynard six times.

The Golden Bears (7-6) are winless in five games against the Longhorns dating to 1959.

Ash caught a 4-yard pass from wide receiver Jaxon Shipley in the second quarter to join BYU's Steve Young, Texas A&M's Bucky Richardson and Oregon's Joey Harrington as quarterbacks who've caught scoring passes in the Holiday Bowl.

The Longhorns had the ball first-and-goal when Ash handed off to running back Malcolm Brown who then handed off to Shipley as if the Longhorns were going to run a reverse. Ash slipped into the end zone and caught Shipley's pass to give Texas a 7-3 lead. Shipley has thrown three touchdown passes this season, all while lining up at wide receiver.

Texas coach Mack Brown joked on Tuesday how much it still bugged him that Harrington caught a TD pass in the Ducks' 35-30 win against Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. The Oregon offensive coordinator then was Jeff Tedford, who has been Cal's coach since 2002. Harrington now works for the Longhorn Network.

"I have to see Joey every day, have to hear him every day," Brown said Tuesday. "I see that throwback to the quarterback every time I see his face. It's not healthy for me."

That play helped salvage a little bit of the Holiday Bowl's reputation for high-scoring, wide-open games.

Ash had another impressive play in the third quarter when he threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Goodwin, who made a nice over-the-shoulder catch in full stride. That gave the Longhorns a 14-10 lead.

Texas put it away on Cody Johnson's 4-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter, which was set up when Maynard was sacked and fumbled, which was recovered by Chris Whaley at the Cal 44. Goodwin ran for 37 yards and Johnson had a 3-yard gain before his touchdown run.

Cal briefly took the lead at 10-7 after Isi Sofele's 6-yard run to cap the opening drive of the second half.

Ash's long TD pass to Goodwin came four plays into the next Texas drive.

2011 in Review: Steve Jobs

Forget the millions of iPods, iPads and iPhones sold around the world the past few years. For a true measure of Steve Jobs? life and legacy, consider this:

In a time when billionaires, businessmen, bankers and anyone else considered part of the 1% seemingly rank right behind terrorists in the American psyche, Jobs? death had mourners from all walks and income levels turning Apple storefronts from San Francisco to Sydney to Shanghai into sidewalk shrines to honor a billionaire businessman who was as ruthless and competitive as he was brilliant and innovative.

Though the cause of death was decidedly different, the mass outpouring of appreciation and affection for Apple?s co-founder, who died at 56 of pancreatic cancer, was eerily reminiscent of when John Lennon was killed.

Which is only fitting, considering Jobs wasn?t just a visionary entrepreneur behind the cutting-edge computers, music players, smartphones and tablets that changed the way the world works, plays and communicates.

He was a rock star in his own right, whose corporate events to announce The Next Big iThing were the business-world equivalent of a raucous concert ? complete with a devoted cult of groupies and fanboys.

He wasn?t a great statesman or philanthropist, nor was he a beloved entertainer or gifted, once-in-a-lifetime athlete. Yet Jobs was arguably the most influential person of the fledgling 21st century.

Don?t believe it? Take a look around your subway car, the street you?re on, your workplace, even your home. Chances are good you?ll see more than a few folks using one of Jobs? creations ? or using something a rival created to compete in vain with his handiwork. (Zune, anybody?)

Chances are even better that those folks couldn?t imagine life without one of Steve Jobs? hi-tech toys.

Debt-riddled Japan relaxes decades-old arms exports ban

TOKYO | Tue Dec 27, 2011 4:08am EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Debt-riddled Japan Tuesday relaxed its self-imposed decades-old ban on military equipment exports in a move that will open new markets to its defense contractors and help the nation squeeze more out of its defense budget.

The government's security council agreed to the relaxing of the ban to allow Japan to take part in the joint development and production of arms with other countries and to supply military equipment for humanitarian missions, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said at a news conference.

"The new standards (on weapons exports) are a result of the government considering measures that required attention amid recent changes to the environment surrounding international defense equipment," Fujimura said, referring to rising arms costs that could put strain on the government, with public debt twice the size of its economy.

The rule adopted in 1967 banned sales to communist countries, those involved in international conflicts or subject to United Nations sanctions.

It later became a blanket ban on exports and on the development and production of weapons with countries other than the United States, making it impossible for manufacturers to participate in multinational projects.

"The regulations on weapons exports are based on the concept that as a pacifist country Japan should aim to avoid fanning international conflicts, and we will keep a close watch on exports," Fujimura said.

The relaxing of the rules does not mean Japan will begin openly selling its military products to the world -- exports will be limited to strategic allies like the U.S.

The move could still allow companies such as Mitsubishi Heavy (7011.T) to join the development of Lockheed Martin's (LMT.N) F-35, which Tokyo picked last week as its next frontline fighter, planning to buy 42 machines at an estimated cost of more than $7 billion.

MORE THAN DOUBLE

Although Japan is the world's sixth-biggest military spender, it often pays more than double other nations for the same equipment because local export-restricted manufacturers can only fill small orders at a high cost.

Removing the ban would stretch its defense purse further as military spending in neighboring China expands.

This year, Beijing raised military outlays by 12.7 percent. That included money for its own stealth fighter, the J-20, which made its maiden flight in January.

In contrast, Japan's defense budget has been shrinking in past years as ballooning costs for social security and servicing its growing debt pile squeeze other spending.

Given fiscal restraints, Tokyo is keen to make its defense program more efficient to maintain its military capability in the face of China's rise and growing uncertainties in the region.

The relaxation of the ban, that has been modified in the past to allow sharing of military technology with the U.S., could also be a boon for Japanese manufacturers as the strong yen weighs on their civilian exports and weak domestic demand and budget constraints restrict growth at home.

Israeli girl's plight highlights Jewish extremism

A shy eight-year-old schoolgirl has unwittingly found herself on the front line of Israel's latest religious war.

Naama Margolese is a pale, blue-eyed, ponytailed, bespectacled second-grader who is afraid of walking to her religious Jewish girls school for fear of ultra-Orthodox extremists who have spat on her and called her a whore for dressing "immodestly."

Her plight has drawn new attention to the simmering issue of religious coercion in Israel, and the increasing brazenness of extremists in the insular ultra-Orthodox Jewish community.

"When I walk to school in the morning I used to get a tummy ache because I was so scared ... that they were going to stand and start yelling and spitting," she said softly in an interview with The Associated Press Monday. "They were scary. They don't want us to go to the school."

The new girls school that Naama attends in the city of Beit Shemesh, to the west of Jerusalem, is on the border between an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood and a community of modern Orthodox Jewish residents, many of them American immigrants.

The ultra-Orthodox consider the school an encroachment on their territory. Dozens of black-hatted men jeer and physically accost the girls almost daily, the students say.

Televised images of Naama sobbing en route to school have shocked many Israelis, elicited statements of outrage from the country's leadership, sparked a Facebook page with nearly 10,000 followers dedicated to "protecting little Naama" and plans for a demonstration this week in her honor.

"Who's afraid of an 8-year-old student?" blared Sunday's main headline in the leading Yediot Ahronot daily.

'Modesty patrols'
Beit Shemesh's growing ultra-Orthodox population has erected street signs calling for the separation of sexes on the sidewalks, dispatched "modesty patrols" to enforce a chaste female appearance and hurled stones at offenders and outsiders. Walls of the neighborhood are plastered with signs exhorting women to dress modestly in closed-necked, long-sleeved blouses and long skirts.

Naama's case has been especially shocking because of her young age and because she attends a religious school and dresses with long sleeves and a skirt. Extremists, however, consider even that outfit, standard in mainstream Jewish religious schools, to be immodest.

This week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke out against the violence.

Story: Religious Jews still try to segregate Israel buses

"The Israel police are taking, and will take, action to arrest and stop those who spit, harass or raise a hand. This has no place in a free and democratic state," he told his Cabinet.

The abuse and segregation of women in Israel in ultra-Orthodox areas is nothing new, and critics accuse the government of turning a blind eye.

The ultra-Orthodox are perennial king-makers in Israeli coalition politics ? two such parties serve as key members of Netanyahu's coalition. They receive generous government subsidies, and police have traditionally been reluctant to enter their communities.

The ultra-Orthodox Jews make up 10 percent of Israel's population and are its fastest growing sector because of a high birth rate. In the past, they have generally confined their strict lifestyle to their own neighborhoods. But they have become increasingly aggressive in trying to impose their ways on others, as their population has grown and spread to new areas.

"It is clear that Israeli society is faced with a challenge that I am not sure it can handle," said Menachem Friedman, a professor emeritus of Bar Ilan University and expert on the ultra-Orthodox, "a challenge that is no less and no more than an existential challenge."

Most of Israel's secular majority, in cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa, is not directly affected, but in a few places like Beit Shemesh ? a city of 100,000 people that include ultra-Orthodox, modern Orthodox and secular Jews ? tensions have erupted into the open.

Abuse of girls
The abuse of the girls is an example. The girls' parents take turns escorting their daughters into school property to protect them. The parents, too, have been cursed and spat upon.

Hadassa Margolese, Naama's 30-year-old Chicago-born mother, an Orthodox Jew who covers her hair and wears long sleeves and a long skirt, says, "It shouldn't matter what I look like. Someone should be allowed to walk around in sleeveless shirts and pants and not be harassed."

On Monday, dozens of ultra-Orthodox men heckled AP journalists who were filming a sign calling for segregation of sidewalks outside their synagogue, chanting "shame on you," "get out of here" and "anti-Semites."

Story: Israel suspends ad campaign that upset US Jews

Also Monday, several dozen ultra-Orthodox men threw rocks at a Channel 10 TV crew and at police and set a trash can on fire, police said. One man was arrested.

City spokesman Matityahu Rosenzweig condemned the violence but said it is the work of a small minority and has been taken out of proportion.

"Every society has its fringes, and the police should take action on this," he said.

For Margolese, the recent clashes ? and the price of exposing her young daughter ? boil down to a fight over her very home.

"They want to push us out of Beit Shemesh. They want to take over the city," said Margolese.

No fitness concerns for Team India, says Dhoni

Last updated on: December 24, 2011?15:06 IST

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday said injury-prone pacers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are expected to be fit for the first Test against Australia and precautions have been taken to ensure that they don't break down in the middle of the series.

"We've missed Zaheer quite a few times in the past. We did give them (Zaheer and Ishant) some time off, they bowled in the practice game as well as in the practice session. They are shaping up well. There are two more days and we know a lot can happen in two days. Hopefully, they would all be available for selection," Dhoni said in Melbourne.

"We've tried to take as much precaution as we could (regarding Zaheer and Ishant). We've tried our best whatever we could do. Players have also played their part, they worked outside the field also, in the gym and the rehab sessions they needed to do. They have put in a lot of effort in practice. Hopefully, they wouldn't have any injury.

"Everyone's fit for the game. All players are looking fit which you need for the format of the game. We don't need to be worried (on fitness count)," he added.

Last updated on: December 24, 2011?15:06 IST

Dhoni said the fireworks would only be limited to on-field action, promising that his side would ensure a controversy-free series without compromising on the intensity.

"Individuals do make mistakes. But as a professional cricketer, you don't want it. There is a lot at stake, people look up to you, so you want it controversy-free. Still, it's important you make it interesting," said Dhoni referring to the 2008 series when ugly exchanges between the two sides almost led to the tour being abandoned midway.

All hell had broken loose during the second Test at Sydney when India was at the receiving end of a few controversial decisions, capped by the "Monkeygate scandal" which dragged a few players of the two teams into the chambers of a court.

Dhoni also hoped the tour would be different in respect that India has never prepared as well as they have for the present tour.

"We've taken care of the preparation -- if 12-14 days are not enough then even one month wouldn't be enough. We've worked and looked at preparation from all angles so that once we are on the field, we can play by instinct and not worry about other factors.

"Our batters have toured here in the past. They know these conditions well. The first practice wicket (in Canberra) was very different, a bit on the slower side. But this one in the nets here has a bit more bounce which is useful," he said.

Last updated on: December 24, 2011?15:06 IST

Dhoni is conscious of the fact that everyone expects his team to win the present Test series but he doesn't want to lose sight of the immediate task.

"How we start in the first Test is important. We want to be in the moment. Break the match into sessions, try to win more sessions than the opposition team. If we win enough sessions, we will win the Test. Our emphasis would be on small things, not where we want to be at the end of the fourth Test.

"There's no point in taking that extra pressure. It will not help us. We need to keep it simple."

The India skipper then went on to speak about a few individuals of the side, including Sachin Tendulkar, who everyone expects to get his 100th international century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

"He (Sachin) keeps it simple. He would get it, sometime in this or the next Test, this or the next series. It is on the way. It isn't something he wouldn't achieve. But if he gets it soon, everyone would feel relieved.?

"Getting 100 hundreds is something really big. If you ask me, he's played more international cricket than we have even practiced. He also shares a lot with youngsters who are new to the side. Everyone in the world would cherish the moment when he gets his 100," Dhoni said.

Dhoni also said that opener Virender Sehwag's form would also be a key factor for the team.

"Virender Sehwag is also a key player for us. We rely on him to give a good opening start. He scores at a quick pace, puts the opposition bowlers under pressure. When he is at the crease, you can't bowl warm up deliveries.

"If it's the first delivery or the last ball before stumps, he would score. It doesn't matter as long as it is in his areas. It's good to have him in the side. He enjoys the way he plays. He backs himself to play those shots," he said.

Last updated on: December 24, 2011?15:06 IST

On the speculation surrounding Ishant's fitness, Dhoni said, "Ishant is a very honest player. He works really hard at the nets. In a few years he has been with the team, he's someone who turns up on the field and gives his 100 per cent. He has a good attitude.

"He plays 60-70 per cent of his cricket in India where it's difficult to motivate yourself for even if you bowl 140kmph, the ball hardly reaches the wicketkeeper."

Dhoni also had words of praise for young off-spinner R Ashwin, whom he expects to do well in the series.

"It's good to have him, he has few variations. Even when wicket is not helping him, whether he is getting help or not, he adapts well. That's a big positive. The wickets here would be different from the sub-continent as he would get good bounce. He can capitalise on it but he needs to be patient.

"Spinners have key roles in longer format especially. As the game goes and the wicket becomes slower, you need spinners to make use of the foot marks. You need them to keep things tight, give time off to fast bowlers and give crucial breakthroughs. They have a very crucial role."

Last updated on: December 24, 2011?15:06 IST

About his own batting, Dhoni admitted this it hasn't been a very great year for him in terms of batting at number seven but also pointed out that he missed out on big scores a few times because he ran out of partners.

"It's not been a brilliant year for me at number seven. But I've score a lot of 80s. Sometimes I have run short of partners, as it was in South Africa. All of a sudden, I didn't have batsmen batting with me. I tried to score runs and got out. However, I would like to improve as an individual. Great players are helping me."

Dhoni didn't want to run down Australia's young cricketers only because they are inexperienced.

"People talk a lot about inexperience. Even McGrath and Shane Warne made debut. They hadn't played many games but in due course, they became legends. Youngsters can also do so. Inexperience will nto count as long as you can adapt to the condtions."

One concern, Dhoni was candid enough to admit, was the massive size of the MCG which can test the fielding ability of cricketers.

"It's massive, a really big ground. We have seen batsmen have run four, even five is possible if fielder is slow. Because the outfield is lush and green, the shots get slow and you run a lot of singles which puts pressure on the fielders in the outfield.

"It's a bit of concern for fielding is very important. We've got quite a few good fielders in the outfield. What we want to achieve though is good catching in the slips. I think that would be important."

LSA, Will You Ever Forgive Gabrielle Union or Alicia Keys?

The exact time they started messing around is a question, but she was definitely underage. If you watch interviews he always changes his age when he was involved with her. I have heard him say in one interview he was 19 or 20, and that makes her how old since he is 5 1/2 years older than her. He lied about his age for years until he was on Larry King and he told his true age. I always knew Pras was 4 years older than her, and Wyclef was older than Pras. I will try to find the interview. It was with a Chicago radio station. Remember in the song 911 he wrote for her he says,

Ewan McGregor's "Salmon Fishing" opens Palm Springs Fest (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt, will open the Palm Springs International Film Festival January 5, organizers said Thursday.

The showing will mark the U.S. debut of the British comedy, which was directed by Oscar nominee Lasse Hallstrom ("My Life as a Dog") and written by Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire").

Two other McGregor films will also be shown at the festival: There will be a special presentation of "Haywire," a Steven Soderbergh-directed action film also starring McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum and Bill Paxton; and the drama "Perfect Sense," which co-stars Eva Green, is on the lineup, as well.

Other titles to be showcased at the festival include "Albert Nobbs," an Irish drama starring Glenn Close; the thriller "Thin Ice," starring Greg Kinnear, Alan Arkin and Billy Crudup; and "Sal," a biopic about actor Sal Mineo. James Franco directed, wrote and stars in "Sal."

The festival's Modern Masters section will feature Lynne Ramsay's "We Need to Talk About Kevin," Pawel Pawlikowski's "The Woman in the Fifth," "Il Postino" director Michael Radford's "Michel Petrucciani," Christoffer Boe's "Beast," Masato Harada's "Chronicle of My Mother," Andrey Zvyaginstev's "Elena," Nanni Moretti's "Habemus Papam," Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne "The Kid with a Bike," Chen Kaige's "Sacrifice" and Robert Gu?diguian's "The Snows of Kilimanjaro."

The Palm Springs International Film Festival will close January 15 with the German comedy "Almanya, Welcome to Germany."

In total, the festival will host 187 films from 73 countries. There will be 61 premieres.

"It's a wide ranging line-up of highly accomplished and often provocative new films, coupled with an expanded archival section," festival director Darryl Macdonald said in a statement.

"The festival is positively bursting with the work of emerging filmmakers this year -- more than a third of the films are first features, representing the programming team's commitment to showcasing new talent," artistic director Helen du Toit added.

The anticipated attendance at the festival is 130,000.

Noisy Toys Might Harm Kids' Hearing (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Some toys at the top of children's Christmas wish lists could pose a hearing threat, according to researchers.

They measured the noise levels of 24 popular toys and bought the 10 loudest to test in a soundproof booth. All 10 toys exceeded 90 decibels and several reached 100 decibels or more, which is about equal to the noise of a power mower, chain saw or subway train.

Extended, unprotected exposure to sounds above 85 decibels can lead to hearing damage, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

"Generally, toys are safe if used properly," Dr. Hamid Djalilian, an associate professor of otolaryngology and director of neurotology and skull base surgery at the University of California, Irvine, said in a university news release. "We tested the sound levels at the speaker and again at 12 inches, which is about the length of a toddler's arm."

Hearing problems may occur if a noisy toy is held too close to the ears, they found.

"Children are very sensitive to loud and high-pitched sounds. Unfortunately, hearing loss from noise damage is permanent and not currently curable," Djalilian said.

If you're buying a noisy toy for a child, pay attention to location of the speaker. It's better if the speaker is on the underside of the toy instead of on top. Djalilian also suggested you hold the toy as a child would and listen to the sound.

"If it hurts your ears then it's probably too loud for a child," he said.

Here is a list from the release of the toys tested and the decibel levels at the speaker and 12 inches from the speaker:

  • Road Rippers Lightning Rods: 108 / 68
  • I Am T-Pain microphone: 101 / 64
  • Tonka Mighty Motorized Fire Engine: 100 / 69
  • Marvel Super Shield Captain America: 98 / 69
  • Whac-A-Mole game: 95 / 69
  • Tapz electronic reflex game: 95 / 65
  • Sesame Street Let's Rock Elmo: 95 / 74
  • VTech Magical Learning Wand: 94 / 69
  • VTech Magical Learning Wand: 93 / 60
  • Green Lantern Colossal Cannon: 92 / 67

China slams Christian Bale for "creating news" (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China slammed Hollywood actor and "Batman" star Christian Bale Wednesday for "creating news" after he was roughed up by security guards as he attempted to visit a blind legal activist whose detention has sparked a domestic and international outcry.

Bale and a camera crew from CNN were last week jostled by men in plainclothes in Dongshigu village in eastern Shandong province, where activist Chen Guangcheng has been under house arrest for 15 months.

Bale was in China for the premiere of his latest film, "The Flowers of War" by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, a lavish and at times graphic tear-jerker about the 1937 Nanjing Massacre which is China's Oscar entry for best foreign language film.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin, who was asked if China had been embarrassed by Bale's actions given the country's hopes for the film to win an Academy award, said it was Bale who should be embarrassed.

"If anyone should be embarrassed it's the relevant actor, not the Chinese side," Liu told a daily news briefing, in the country's first reaction to Bale's actions.

"What I understand is that the actor was invited by the director Zhang Yimou to attend the movie premiere. He was not invited to any village in Shandong to create news or make a film," he added.

"If he wants to create news, I don't think that would be welcomed by China."

He did not answer a question about whether Bale's actions might affect the chances of any of his upcoming movies being screened in China.

"The Flowers of War" has played to ecstatic audiences in China, and has raked in some 200 million yuan ($31.5 million) at the box office since being released last week.

It gets a limited release in the United States this week, where it has so far garnered unenthusiastic reviews.

The fate of Chen, a self-schooled advocate, has become a test of wills, pitting the Communist Party's crackdown on dissent against activists championing his cause and that of artist Ai Weiwei.

Chen angered Shandong officials in 2005 by exposing a program of forced abortions as part of China's one-child policy. He was formally released in September 2010 after four years in jail on a charge of "blocking traffic."

China does not take kindly to foreign criticism of its rights record. In 2008, Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at a Shanghai concert after performing her song "Declare Independence," angering the government and local fans alike.

As a young boy, Bale starred in "Empire of the Sun," a film set in World War Two about a British family in Shanghai.

Takedowns and Lawsuits Have Already Started in the Fight Against SOPA (The Atlantic Wire)

A billowing controversy pitting Will.i.am, his label Universal and the popular file-sharing site MegaUpload against each other looks like it could be the first battle on the front lines of Congress's war on piracy. The situation is a little bit confusing and involves a promotional video, not-so-creatively titled "MegaUpload Mega Song," that may or may not be a pretty well-positioned protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) which is on the agenda of a House Judiciary Committee meeting on Thursday morning. Bear with us. There be devilish details.

Related: Chris Dodd's Defense of SOPA Makes Him Sound Like a Despot

Will.i.am is basically stuck in the middle of a fight between Universal and MegaUpload. "Mega Song" went viral last week and?and a number of other hip-hop stars like Will.i.am, Snoop Dogg, Kanye and, for some reason, Kim Kardashian singing the praises of the file-sharing site. As a?report?circulated that Will.i.am had filed a complaint about MegaUpload not owning the rights to his likeness -- which is crazy because he clearly stars in the video -- Universal successfully issued a Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown request. That was swiftly countered by a lawsuit from the Hong Kong-based MegaUpload?claiming that it indeed did own the rights and even had appearance consent and release agreements on file for all of the artists. In a federal court filing on Thursday, MegaUpload included the form Will.i.am signed back in September giving permission, and suddenly, it looks like Universal might be involved in a lawsuit they can't win. And the label stands to lose a ton of money in the process.

Related: Chris Dodd Responds to Critics Comparing Him to a Despot

If this is a protest against SOPA it's a brilliant one. You have a piece of intellectual property that's not really copyrighted and one of the labels that's been supporting SOPA yanks it off the Internet. (Don't worry, the Internet found a way to upload about a dozen more copies to YouTube in no time. It's embedded below.) The video is definitely a MegaUpload promo but given the timing of its release, around the peak of the protests against SOPA and just a few days before the bill is set to clear committee in the House, it's been read as evidence that these very famous artists support file-sharing. Kanye calls MegaUpload, "the fastest and safest way to send files," and Snoop says, "it keeps the kids off the street." The video is no masterpiece -- in fact, it's quite awful -- but the extent to which Universal chased it down and guarded its ownership over its artists likenesses shows how aggressively Hollywood is willing to pursue even potential copyright violations. Again, Universal stands to fork over a decently sized settlement if they lose their lawsuit against MegaUpload, but the label also looks a little evil for suing a file-sharing site over a silly promo video.

Related: Chris Dodd Finds the Silver Lining in Chinese Internet Censorship

This isn't the only SOPA-related stumble from the entertainment industry. Earlier this week, the (actively anti-SOPA) website TorrentFreak uncovered evidence that even the people that worked for entertainment companies combatting piracy were downloading pirated content. Gawker's Ryan Tate blogged about it:?

Using a new BitTorrent monitoring service, the website TorrentFreak discovered people at Sony Pictures Entertainment IP addresses downloading "Beavis and Butthead," "Conan the Barbarian" and rock duo the Black Keys, none produced by Sony. Over at NBC Universal, the download action included "Game of Thrones," "2 Broke Girls," and "How To Make It in America," none made by NBC or Universal. (We'll forgive the media conglomerate its "Cowboys and Aliens" download, since it helps distribute the film, but producers Fairview and Imagine Entertainment may still have a legitimate grievance). Fox, meanwhile, was all over Paramount's "Super "8. That would be the same Fox that had a guy sent to jail for uploading "Wolverine."

This torrent traffic were pulled from only a small sample of the total so, as TorrentFreaks notes, is only the tip of the iceberg. ? Aren't oligopolies great?

Then there's the whole matter of former Senator Chris Dodd, who's currently the entertainment industry's most high-profile lobbyist as the head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). He's been struggling to defend SOPA against its critics who say the bill will usher in an unprecedented era of censorship in the United States. Dodd sort of sounds like a despot when he argues that SOPA will catch criminals, not censor the Internet.

Related: Bring on the Anxiety Parade for the SOPA Alternative

Looping back to the Will.i.am-Universal-MegaUpload controversy, it's easy to see how quickly and easily something can be wrongfully censored on a site like YouTube. Given even more power under the provisions of SOPA, the United States government could actually block YouTube altogether for hosting allegedly pirated content. We'd put extra emphasis on "allegedly," since SOPA allows for a quick and seamless process from a Hollywood rights-owner filing a complaint to the site being blocked; it takes an allegation, not solid proof. It turns out that Hollywood's allegations are sometimes wrong, and while we'll wait for a judge to decide the fate of MegaUpload's case against Universal as well as those movie-downloading movie industry employees, it's up to Congress this week to decide the fate of the First Amendment. ?

(AP Photo/Andrew Medichini)

ROME (AP) ? The Italian government on Friday easily won a confidence vote on its package of austerity measures in the lower chamber of Parliament as more protest strikes hit the country.

Premier Mario Monti had called the vote in the Chamber of Deputies to speed passage of the euro30 billion ($39 billion) in extra taxes and pension reforms that he says are vital to save Italy, the eurozone's third largest economy, from financial disaster. About euro10 billion of those savings would be reinvested into growth.

The package was approved by a vote of 495 in favor and 88 against. Had it been blocked, Monti and his government of technocrats would have been forced to resign ? exactly a month after the economist and former EU commissioner was sworn in with the task of keeping Italy from being the next victim of Europe's debt crisis.

The Senate is expected to vote on the measures in the next few days to complete the legislative approval.

As lawmakers voted, a one-day nationwide transportation strike caused chaos for commuters. Many rushed to work or school to anticipate the start of the strike, while some railway travelers were left.

Unions are incensed over pension reforms making Italians work more years and until an older age before being eligible for generous pension checks. Monti's government softened the reforms slightly.

The wide majority of votes in favor of the package was expected, but that doesn't mean the main political parties are happy with all of it.

Lawmakers on both left and right of center have criticized as too harsh the reforms to Italy's pension system. Many of former premier Silvio Berlusconi's loyalists, who make up Parliament's largest party, denounced Monti's decision to revive a home property tax that Berlusconi had eliminated to keep a 2008 campaign pledge. To appease possible dissenters, the government agreed to give deductions on the tax to Italians with large families.

Among those voting against the austerity package were lawmakers from the Northern League, the regional party which was Berlusconi's crucial coalition partner in his two decades in power. It is not clear if the League would team up again with Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in the next election campaign.

But lawmakers are also keenly aware that if Monti fails, new elections could come as early as this Spring. And much of the electorate is unhappy with new and higher taxes, including a rising sales tax, and changes to a pension system that only until a few years ago allowed workers as young as 50 to retire with pensions as much as 80 percent of their last paychecks.

NY Times CEO exiting, without explanation (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Janet Robinson will step down as chief executive of the New York Times Co at the end of the month, as the company continues to struggle with advertising declines and a years-long slump in its share price.

The problems plaguing newspaper companies are well known. Readers have ditched print for digital, causing circulation and advertising revenue to plummet. Newspaper company Lee Enterprises last week succumbed to industry changes and filed for bankruptcy protection.

Robinson, who steered the company through one of the harshest business environments it has ever faced, underscored the struggle her company faces during a presentation at the recent UBS investor conference in New York.

She said that fourth-quarter advertising revenue is expected to "improve slightly" from the previous quarter's 9 percent decline, putting a positive spin on yet another quarter of decreasing ad dollars.

The New York Times Co, which in addition to its flagship paper publishes The Boston Globe and the International Herald Tribune, among others, will begin a search for internal and external candidates to replace Robinson, 61.

Until then, publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. will oversee the company, the Times said in a statement announcing Robinson's planned retirement.

News of Robinson's planned departure coincides with the retirement of Martin Nisenholtz, the company's longtime digital leader, at the end of the year, meaning the Times Co will start 2012 without a CEO or digital boss.

The Times Co gave no explanation for Robinson's sudden departure, which caught analysts as well as company insiders by surprise. Speculation among industry observers and the analyst community centered on the company's faltering stock price, which has declined more than 80 percent since Robinson was appointed CEO in December 2004. This year alone, shares are down nearly 25 percent, a performance that has frustrated investors.

Times Co shares, which had traded in the mid-$30s during one point in Robinson's tenure, closed trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange up 1.8 percent, or 13 cents, to $7.53.

"It is very unusual to have a long-time CEO suddenly announce her leaving within two weeks with no replacement," said Evercore Partners analyst Douglas Arthur. "She's done a lot of good things but at the end of the day the stock price is the ultimate measure of success."

In a recent interview, Robinson said she considered it a "mandate to increase shareholder value," but argued she had done so through building a "multiplatform company" even during a period of "economic uncertainty and secular pressures."

Within the New York Times' newsroom, word of the shakeup began to spread about 20 minutes before the announcement.

"No one had an inkling this was coming," said a source at the paper, who declined to be named. "As recently as last week she was taking meetings with people and mapping out business plans for well into next year."

Robinson, who has worked at the company for nearly three decades, became president and chief executive officer in late 2004. In the following years, she was credited with lowering costs, improving the balance sheet and establishing a plan to charge for online content.

"Obviously, the last few years have been tough as, together, we have navigated one of the most difficult periods in publishing history," Robinson said in a memo to staff on Thursday. "It is probably an understatement to say that transitioning from a traditional print journalism model to the digital world has been an enormous challenge."

One success has been a meter-modeled pay wall instituted at the flagship New York Times, which grants digital readers access to 20 articles per month for free before requiring them to pay for additional content. Credit for that is owed more to Nisenholtz than Robinson, however.

The New York Times currently ranks second behind rival The Wall Street Journal in digital subscribers and third behind the WSJ and USA Today in print subscribers, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Robinson, who will stay on in a consulting role for the next year that will pay her $4.5 million, began her career as a school teacher before joining the Times Co in 1983 in sales.

The Falls River, Massachusetts-native -- who favors stark black dresses, bright red lipstick and pulled-back hair -- climbed the ranks of the women's magazine division before being put in charge of the company's newspaper unit.

The next CEO's overarching mandate will be the same as it is for every newspaper company, only more pronounced given the Times Co's exalted status: decrease print reliance by making digital subscriptions and advertising both the main and majority drivers of revenue.

Currently, print advertising accounts for 37 percent of the company's revenue versus just 14 percent for digital advertising. Circulation revenue, which includes both subscriptions and single-copy sales, ranks as the company's biggest revenue driver at 42 percent.

"My view is that they should find someone from outside," said Evercore's Arthur. "This is a very challenged industry undergoing a wrenching transformation and I think a strong outside candidate will be positive for the stock and for their strategy."
